What can you see at the Library of Hadrian?

Propylon (west facade)
The Propylon was the only original entrance to Hadrian's Library and remains the most recognisable surviving feature. The western gateway carried four Corinthian-order columns of Phrygian marble and opened into the great peristyle court.
On either side of the propylon, a tall marble wall rose, originally supporting seven Corinthian columns of Karystian marble. The surviving section of the west facade, with its restored columns and visible inscription honouring the prefect Herculius, dominates the view from Areos Street and frames the entrance to the archaeological site.

What should you know before visiting the monument?
- Hadrian's Library is a compact archaeological site: most visitors spend between 30 and 45 minutes inside and easily combine it with the adjacent Roman Agora and the nearby Ancient Agora on the same day.
- Timed-entry tickets apply since April 2024. The ticket is valid from one hour before to one hour after the selected slot for this site, and reaching the entrance about 30 minutes early helps avoid the queue at the gate.
- Comfortable shoes with closed toes are recommended: the walking surface is uneven ancient stone and marble, with low ruined sections to step around.
- Informational signage on site is limited and bilingual (Greek and English), so a printed guide, an audio guide, or some pre-reading on the Hadrianic period helps make sense of the layered history visible in the courtyard.
- Photography of the columns, west facade, and Tetraconch with a personal camera or phone is allowed; professional photo shoots, filming, large luggage, and food are not permitted on site.
- The summer sun is intense and the site has very little shade, so a hat, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle make the visit far more comfortable between June and September.
- The earliest entry slot (08:00) gives the quietest visit and the best light on the west facade; late afternoon also avoids the largest tour groups, especially during the high season.
- The site is wheelchair-accessible at the entrance and across most of the cleared courtyard, with a few uneven steps near the Tetraconch foundations that may require assistance.
